Greensboro, NC Childcare: Raising an Early Reader!

Posted on 07-14-2016 | Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Greensboro

From Mother Goose to Jane Austen and Mark Twain, a well-written poem or story can transport us to a different time with enjoyable (often relatable) characters, important life lessons, and whole new worlds. Reading is a timeless pastime, passed down from century to century, and one thing is certain – reading significantly helps to improve our creative and critical thinking skills. The benefits of reading begin as early as the first time a child writes her first sentence. Reading is the most essential skill to have as your child pursues her education. Reading is the steppingstone into the world of knowledge and information – so it’s a great idea to get that steppingstone nailed down at an early age!

The first five years of a child’s life are the most formative and influential when it comes to learning new information and establishing a solid educational foundation that sets the child up for a lifetime of success. In fact, 90% of brain development occurs by the age of five! Even in infancy, a child’s mind is processing and breaking down the new experiences around her.

One of the most essential skills a child must learn is how to read. Literacy opens the door to a thousand more opportunities to discover and explore the world. Children benefit in so many ways from mastering the skill of reading. Parents and teachers play a large role in helping them achieve reading success.

So, how can you encourage your little one (however little they may be!) to love to read? Below are some simple guidelines to help you navigate this important journey with your child!

1. Read to your child– Starting as early as infancy, take some time out of your day to read a book to your child. The rhythms and inflections of your voice as you read will become familiar to your child and can even comfort and soothe. As your child gets older, consider tackling chapter books and reading a little bit of a story each night before bed. Many children love getting carried into a world of make-believe and it gives them something to look forward to about bedtime!

2. Place your child in literacy-rich environments– Studies have shown that children who spend time in places where a lot of different words are used will more quickly develop and expand their own vocabulary. As your child masters new words, reading will become increasingly more enjoyable with new books and stories.

3. Enroll your child in a top-quality Preschool program– Giving your child the exposure to professional and enthusiastic teachers at a young age allows them to learn new skills and flourish. When considering a preschool or childcare for your child, ask about the curriculum, programs, and take a tour of the facility. The best schools will always have state-of-the-art facilities and a teaching staff who is motivated to serve and teach the students in their care.
