Teaching Children about Healthy Food

Posted on 02-02-2017

By providing your children with nutritious meals, you are equipping them with the tools to achieve their goals and maintain a positive attitude. Additionally, children who are educated on the importance of a well-balanced diet are often more inclined to make healthy choices on their own. Here are a few ways you can help your child make delicious and nutritious choices in 2017:

Healthy helper: Have your children help out when cooking dinner at night. Giving them simple tasks like mixing ingredients or setting the table is an opportunity to teach them about nutrition and get them excited about healthy cooking. You may even spark a new interest in them!

Hello hydration: On average, preschoolers need at least one liter of water every day in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Try to cut back on sugary drinks like soda and certain pre-packaged juices, and aim to instill the importance of hydration in your child.

Encourage, don’t punish: It is completely normal for young children to be picky about what they want to eat. Ensure that your child’s appetite is satisfied by putting at least one thing on their plate that you know they will eat and enjoy. However, it is important that they be exposed to a wide variety of foods and that they are encouraged to try everything at least once. It’s okay if they don’t like it, as long as they keep an open mind.

Everything in moderation: At the end of the day, it is important to teach children about balance. Treating yourself from time to time is perfectly okay as long as your child knows how to make healthy decisions. Reward them with their favorite sweet treat to show them everything is okay in moderation!

Don’t just serve your kids healthy food—teach them why certain foods are more nutritious than others and equip them to make their own smart choices. Empowering your child with decision-making will help to minimize the struggles many parents face at mealtime, and the knowledge your kiddo receives will benefit them for a lifetime.
